Groupon Merchants update brings mobile credit card transactions to Android

With entities like Square and Paypal taking over the mobile payments scene it’s hard for new competitors to break in, but Groupon is looking to improve its chances by bringing Groupon Payments to its Groupon Merchants app for Android. The service allows merchants to accept credit card payments in an easy and secure fashion through the use of a 3.5mm-based card swiper.

The service can be activated within a matter of minutes via your Android device, and aside from the big feature discussed above users can also look forward to improved analytic data, namely the ability to view live transaction history, check daily sales reports, track deposits to external bank accounts and analyze revenue trends.

Groupon Merchants users are subject to a charge of 15 cents plus 1.8% (Visa, Mastercard, Discover) or 3% (American Express) of the bill for each transaction made, standard rates for a service like this. You’ll be paying for the convenience of being able to accept payments with a mobile device, something that’s oft-desired for many different types of businesses (food truck owners, rejoice!).

Of course, as we mentioned before, Square and PayPal offer competitive rates and advantages of their own so if you haven’t already settled on a service then these three are worth putting head to head in order to carefully scrutinize the advantages and disadvantages of each. Head here for more information on Groupon Merchants and see if it’s right for you and your needs. Read on for full press details.

Deal: Asus Transformer Pad TF300 up for grabs from Groupon for $269

If you have been eyeing on the Asus Transformer Pad TF300, you don’t have to wait until Black Friday kicks off to get the tablet at a discounted price. For a limited time and quantity only, coupon site Groupon is selling the TF300 for $269.

The deal on Groupon has been up for a while, and so far over 1,000 units have been sold. Unless they sold out all the available units early, you have about less than two days to take advantage of the offer.

For the offered price, you won’t get the Transformer tablet’s keyboard docking station. Still, the tablet-only unit retails for $349 outside. So we’re looking at an $80 saving. Combined with the free shipping and free returns policy, we think it’s a pretty sweet deal.

As for its specs, here’s a refresher. The Asus Transformer Pad TF300 boasts a 10.1-inch HD IPS display, 1.2GHz Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 16GB internal storage, microSD support, 1GB RAM, 8MP main camera, 1.2MP front-facing camera, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Yes, the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update is already out.

Top 10 Android app updates: TuneWiki, AirDroid, Equalizer

updates-notification-10-market

Welcome back to our weekly Top 10 Android App Updates column, where we take a look at the most upgraded apps for the week. I’ve found that one of the best ways to discover useful apps is to look at what people are actually updating, and not focus on which apps have the most installs.

To find the most updated apps, I turn to AppAware. It’s a great tool that shows me which apps have active support from their developers and sometimes reminds me of an old app that I might have removed long ago. Make sure to install it so your activity can help determine our weekly top 10 list.

This week I’m going to do things a little different. I normally filter out apps that have over 10 million installs, but I’m going to make an exception for popular apps that had significant updates. I hope you enjoy this weekly feature and discover some apps that you might find useful.

TuneWiki – Version 4.0.0

What’s new in this version:

  1. New ‘Ice Cream Sandwich’ inspired design!
  2. Major performance improvements
  3. NOTE: There is an issue on some Android tablets. We’re working on a fix ASAP.
  4. As always, send feedback and ideas to ideas@tunewiki.com

TuneWiki is the music player that lets you get lyrics instantly translated into 40+ languages. This week they rolled out a major update that includes a new Android 4.0 inspired design. I tried out the new version and it appears the performance has been greatly improved. I was able to ID songs pretty quick and it pulled up the lyrics right away. If you have never tried TuneWiki, they also have a social network that lets you comment on and discuss the meaning of lyrics. It’s definitely a unique experience for music fans and it’s free, so check it out.

AirDroid – Version 1.0.5

Waze – Version 3.0.2.8

What’s new in this version:

  1. Pioneer AppRadio support
  2. Fixes for Motorola Defy and Milestone
  3. Fix for application launch via API

Waze has been around since the early days of Android, but we haven’t really talked about it as much since Google Navigation was released. It still has a pretty strong following with it’s social features that connect you to other drivers. The latest update is rather minor, but we wanted to give Waze a shout out for pushing community-based traffic and navigation.

iris. – Version 4.5.1

What’s new in this version:

  1. Supports finer brush in manual mode
  2. (After zooming, brush size remains as it is)
  3. Fixes the distorted image In editing/saving on some phones
  4. Fixes the bug that image taken by front camera is not centered when editing

As long as AfterFocus remains one of the most popular apps in our community, we will keep reporting on the latest news. We still expect a Pro version to be released this month.

There are a ton of themes available, so hopefully you won’t get bored with this one.

  3. Added support for Samsung Galaxy Note and other tablets
  4. Added support for Portugal, Greece, Denmark, Argentina, Mexico, Romania

Like many of you, I have caught the Groupon bug. It used to annoy me with notifications, but the latest update provides users with more control over that. I still think half the daily deals are crap, but there are some real gems in there sometimes.

Apex Launcher – Version 1.1.1

What’s new in this version:

  1. Added option to keep Apex in memory

  7. Fixed a bug with desktop data backup/restore
  8. Other bug fixes and improvements
  9. Updated translations
  10. New permissions are used for unread count notifications in the pro version.

Last week we featured Nova Launcher, so it’s only fair we share Apex Launcher this week. This home screen replacement tool is also targeted at Android 4.0 devices and focuses on performance and an insane amount of customizations. I’ve grown tired of most of these home screen launchers, but they are great if you love to tweak out your home screen.

TripIt – Version 2.4.1

What’s new in this version:

  1. Finally! View your Past Trips while you’re on the go
  2. Note: All of these updates are for the Android phone only.
  3. Various bug fixes and usability enhancements

I travel a lot for work, and I never leave home without making sure my TripIt account is synced. It automatically imports all your travel itinerary and helps you keep up with your flight and hotel information. I rely on it so much, that I can’t travel without it now. The latest update lets you view previous trips and fixes various bugs.

Equalizer – Version 3.1.9

What’s new since version 3.1.7:

  1. New Guided Tour and Tips page, aiming at making users more familiar with the app and how to use it properly.
  2. Available now to selected GoogleTV devices.
  3. Downloaded skins can now be applied from the Download skin page, simply click on the “Apply Skin” button after download finishes.
  4. New Equalizer icon! Special thanks to Keval Kankotiya

We know music apps are always popular, so we thought we should share the latest update to Equalizer. This app provides a ton of presets, multiple skins, support for Google TV, and some nice looking widgets. If you are an audiophile, this is a must download.

Google officially launches Google Offer App for Android

If you are a person who loves saving money and doesn't like to miss good deals, then there's an app for that, and a good one. I'm sure you people are familiar with Google Offers, which is Google's very own service similar to Groupon, which is one of the leaders in online saving deals and coupons. Google officially launched their Google Offers application for Android, which will help people to find local deals. There will be a new featured deal everyday which you can easily access while on the go, and all your previous purchases are saved. Google is working on adding more cities in the 'Google Offer' list, so if your city isn't available don't worry, it should be added soon.

If you're already a Groupon users, it won't hurt to try Google Offer as having more than one app to find the best deals is a win-win situation. Google actually tried buying Groupon a long time ago for $6 billion, but they rejected the offer. So it's kind of Google's policy, if they try buying something from someone, and they refuse, then Google makes its very own to challenge it. You might remember when Google tried buying Facebook, but Facebook declined, and now we have Google+, which is considered the toughest challenger to Facebook. Anyway folks, download the application and share your thoughts about the new app in the comment box below.
