Acer Iconia Tab A100, A200, and A500 won’t receive Jelly Bean

If you’re an Acer Iconia Tab Android tablet user we could have some bad news for you. We’ve heard a few mixed reports on their update schedule but some new comments today have us worried that multiple models will not be seeing the latest version of Android. Multiple models including the Iconia Tab A500 and more.

Interestedly enough Acer just last week updated their new Iconia Tab A700 to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Which runs on the NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor. The older models like their Iconia Tab A100, A200, and A500 all run the older, but highly capable NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor and come with 1GB of RAM. Today we’re hearing all three of those tablets will not be updated past Ice Cream Sandwich.

According to NotebookItalia an Acer UK representative stated that these “old” models will not be updated to the latest version of Android. That being Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. And as they say — this will certainly cause some discontent and anger among the Iconia community.

We’ve heard a few reports that the update is in the testing phase, so this could be a sign that things aren’t going as well as planed. The tablets were late to receive Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, so we can’t expect them to be fast like ASUS to Jelly Bean either. We’ve reached out for additional comments and will report back. So far what we’re hearing today isn’t good. There’s multiple custom ROM’s already available for those who want Jelly Bean, but an official update would be nice. Stay tuned!

Acer says Jelly Bean updates are coming for several tablets, no names and dates mentioned just yet

With Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out for a while now, it’s only natural to expect the market’s major players to announce their upgrading plans. And while the first such signals have been quite shy, with only HTC and Asus making their voices heard, the past week or so has been much more spirited.

Sony let us down by announcing that 2011 Xperia phones won’t be getting JB, while Toshiba and surprisingly Intel raised our spirits by making opposite announcements. Samsung is yet to unveil its Android 4.1 plans, but rumors state that their JB upgrades for the Galaxy S3 and S2 are quite advanced.

Now Acer seems to have been joining the party, at least if we are to trust Dutch website Tablet Guide. The guys at TG are claiming that they talked over the phone with Acer officials, which confirmed that “the company’s tablets will be updated to Android 4.1”.

Before getting overly excited about this supposed phone conversation, you should know that “the company’s tablets” doesn’t necessarily mean all of Acer’s existing Android-based slates. Although no tablet is yet specifically confirmed as being scheduled or not scheduled for an upgrade, there is a good shot that only 2012 slates will take the software leap.

“Acer expects newer tablets to have no problems with the 4.1 update. For older models, the company is still investigating whether Android 4.1 will function well on the somewhat outdated hardware” says Tablet Guide. However, it’s unclear whether these claims have been discussed with Acer officials, or they are simply the website’s assumptions.

Acer has been a busy bee in the tablet world in the last six months, releasing no less than four such gadgets this year. The Iconia Tab A110, A200, A510 and A700 all run Android 4.0 ICS, and are likely to make good with JB as well, given their spec sheets.

Meanwhile, last year’s A100 and A500, launched with Honeycomb on board, have only gotten Ice Cream Sandwich updates back in April, which makes them unlikely candidates for JB leaps at least for the next months or so.

What do you guys think? When will we see Acer’s first tablet get a JB upgrade?

Acer Iconia Tab A100 Android 4.0 ICS update rolling out

Good news folks, if you’re rocking an Acer Iconia Tab you’ll be receiving the update to Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich this week. Acer has confirmed the update should be available for both the Acer A500 and the smaller Iconia A100 starting April 27th, although we are hearing reports of the update rolling out as early as last night.

It appears the update for Acer’s tablet has been rolling out across Europe for a few weeks now, but the US and Canada have been told they’ll have to wait until April 27th like stated above. According to AndroidPolice a few lucky users in Canada received the update last night, so we should be seeing this rollout any time now for the US too.

A build of ICS for the Acer tablet was leaked back in February, but this is the real official version from Acer themselves. We are currently looking for an official changelog or more details but have yet to find anything. If everything goes as planned the update should be arriving for the A500 and A100 on Friday for users in the US, and if you’re lucky it might come sooner. Sources also confirm a small 17MB update will hit after the ICS update, most likely a small bug fixer of some sort.

Have you received ICS on your Acer A100/A500 yet? If so how is everything running?

Acer A500 and A100 tablets will (finally) get ICS by the end of April

The Acer Iconia Tab A500, A100, and A200 have all been released in the first months of 2011, and, at the time, they were considered fairly advanced pieces of technology. Acer’s Honeycomb tablets have been surprisingly popular last year, attracting users with a well balanced mix of high performance, cool looks, and decent pricing.

Fast forward twelve months and you get a whole different tablet landscape, one where dual-core gadgets running Android Honeycomb are considered outdated. Unfortunately, we can’t say that Acer did much to change this opinion, leaving its tablet duo to run that old raggedy Honeycomb. By now, with all the unfulfilled promises made by Acer, most A500 and A100 adopters have either updated their gadgets to ICS with unofficial ROMs or they have given up all hope on ever making the jump to the next OS version.

However, just when we completely lost hope to ever get an update to ICS, Acer has officially announced that both the A100 and A500 will be updated to Android 4 by the end of April. The US A100 will be updated to Android 4 on the 27, with Canadian devices slated to receive the same upgrade on May 3. However, the region that will get the official update first is Latin America, where the update will roll out starting from April 25.

For the A500 update, things are much simpler, with Ice Cream Sandwich coming over-the-air on April 27 in all markets. Needless to say, the Ice Cream Sandwich update will come with several important improvements, faster overall performance, a tweaked user interface, Face Unlock, and some other new features.

Acer Iconia Tab A100 and Dell Streak 7 tablets on sale for $179 today only

Today we have not one, but two great deals for those looking for a budget Android tablet. If you’ve missed some of the deals in the past, or have been waiting for something uber cheap this might be the perfect time. Today you can get the Acer Iconia Tab A100 7-inch tablet, or the Dell Streak 7-inch Tab for $179 factory refurbished. More details, reviews, and link below.

The only problem here is deciding what tablet you’ll want to buy as they have almost identical specs, and are both $179 today only. Both have 1.0 GHz dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processors, 1GB of RAM, front and rear cameras, and Android 3.2 Honeycomb so the choice might be hard for some. The Dell streak will probably never see Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and Acer has confirmed the A100 will receive it later this month. If that is a deciding factor then there is your answer.

On the other hand the Dell Streak 7 comes with more storage, being 16GB instead of 8GB like the Acer, but the Streak also has a lower 480×800 resolution compared to the Acer A100′s 1024 x 600. The Acer will look better, will get updated to the latest OS, but has a smaller battery being only 1,540 mAh. For those T-Mobile customers the Streak 7 is probably the best choice as it uses T-Mobile’s 3G bands and has a SIM slot if you’re interested in that aspect too.

Both of these tablets are factory refurbished and can be yours today for only $179. If the Acer Iconia A100 is your choice head to 1SaleADay.com and get it before the time runs out. If you’ve decided on the Dell Streak 7 you’ll want to stop by Woot.com before it sells out, as that happens often in the wootosphere. Again these deals are available today only, so you better hurry and decide should you want one. Hit the timeline links below to see more on each respective tablet.

DEAL ALERTS: Acer Iconia Tab for $180, Motorola Xoom GSM Unlocked for $300, 32GB Micro SD for $15 and 5,000mAh Portable Battery for $25

This image has no alt text

Alright, we got a handful of great deals for you tonight via the more popular daily deals sites around the net. Don’t want to wasted much time (in case they sell out) so let’s get straight to it. 1SaleADay is offering a refurbished 7-inch Acer Iconia Tab A100 for the rock bottom price of $180. Arguably better than an Amazon Kindle Fire, this is about $20 cheaper than you’d find that pseudo-Android running tablet and with an Android 4.0 upgrade coming down the pipeline, it only adds to the value.

If you’re looking to add a little memory on top of the tab (or any device for that matter) 1SaleADay also has a 32GB class 4 micro SD card up for only $15. Not too shabby at all, and it even comes with a full sized SD adapter. More than likely this will go great in any device you have now but with SD cards seemingly going the way of the dinosaur ( HTC One X, Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S III) these might not be as useful in the future.

Moving on to DailySteals where they currently have a refurbished unlocked 3G version of the Motorola Xoom (32GB) for $300. Again, this is a great deal especially when considering the device plays nice with AT&T’s 3G bands but only T-Mobile’s 2G Edge network. All things considered, you could do a lot worse on a 10-inch tablet that will see an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in the near future.

Finally, we have a 5,000mAh portable battery from New Trent. I’ve seen this little fella pop up from time-to-time in my searches on Amazon and almost pulled the trigger back when it $50. Reviews were generally favorable for the iFuel and anyone with an Android device will no doubt see the value in keeping your device charged up when away from an outlet. At $25, this is most certainly a steal. A steal that, just like for all the others, will only last another 22 hours or so. Anyone taking advantage of any of these offers?

Thanks, Killa357!

Acer Iconia Tab A510 now available, Ice Cream Sandwich incoming for A500 and A100

The Acer Iconia Tab A510 is now available for purchase at $449.99. The Tegra 3 slate went up for pre-order back in March and can now be found at a variety of retailers including Amazon or direct from Acer. The A510 is a 10.1-inch tablet with 1GB of RAM to go along with its 1.3GHz quad-core CPU. At the $450 price point it gets 32GB of storage. The tablet is among the first from Acer to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box.

Speaking of ICS and Acer, their update timeline has been adjusted and the new OS version should be available for the Iconia Tab A500 and Iconia Tab A100 shortly. Both are listed for an April 27th delivery in the US. Canada and Latin America will see the update around the same time.

Acer Iconia Tab A500 and A100 ICS update coming April 27th

Good news for Acer owners: your Android 4.0 updates are finally starting to trickle out. Early adopters who bought the Iconia Tab A500 when it was one of the only Honeycomb tablets available will feel vindicated that they’ll be getting Ice Cream Sandwich very soon. Both the A500 and the smaller A100 will be seeing updates on April 27th (next Friday) in the United States. Canadians get the update on May 3rd (all the better to watch our Galaxy S III liveblog!) and those in Latin America will get updates for the A100 on April 25th and for the A500 on April 27th.

Both Acer tablets use Tegra 2 processors and a full gigabyte of RAM, a combination that’s been proven to run Ice Cream Sandwich quite well. The 10-inch A500 has a standard 1280×800 and the 7-inch A100 uses 1024×600, again, both tried and tested resolutions. And judging by the rollout of Ice Cream Sandwich on the Iconia Tab A200, the slightly updated 10-inch model, everything should go smoothly. The newer tablet was updated to Android 4.0 back in February.

There are a few unanswered questions yet: one, Acer’s website mentions the updates for Mexico and Brazil separately from Latin America, with only “TBA Mid-April” to go on. And the version number of ICS isn’t mentioned either, though since it’s listed as “4.0.x” across the board, Acer will probably go with 4.0.3 as they did with the A200. At least you won’t need a separate computer to flash the new software – when the time comes, just go to your Settings app and press “About Tablet>System Update>Check Now” to begin the update process. If you’re the impatient type, you could always try the leaked version.

Android 4.0 ICS leaks for Acer Iconia Tab A500 and A100

Good news all you Acer tablet lovers. When the A200 started getting Android 4.0 ICS a few weeks back, then we later heard the older more popular A500 and A100 wouldn’t get updated until late April I’m sure a few of you were upset. Good news today comes in the form of the official Android 4.0 ICS builds for both tablets being leaked over on XDA.

Instead of waiting until mid April for official updates you can get some tasty Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich right now if you feel like flashing some unofficial builds for your tablet. Both the ACER Iconia Tab A500 and the smaller A100 builds have been leaked and appear to work quite well. No major bugs or issues are being reported although most likely these aren’t the final builds from Acer.

The only problem we see at the moment is you wont have root access after flashing these official but early leaked builds. Most likely they’ll be rooted soon enough but if you don’t want to wait you can try them now from the links provided below. It appears to be early builds that are almost completely stock other than a few color and theme changes. Many of the Acer specific changes aren’t present in these builds. Either way you can use the simple instructions below to flash these, just use caution and do so at your own risk.

1. Rename the provided file to update.zip
2. Copy the file to the root of your external sd card
3. Turn off the device; and press power while holding the volume up button – don’t touch anything until the device reboots itself
4. Voila – you’ve got ICS

This image has no alt text

Those of you waiting for the official upgrade to Android 4.0 for both the Acer Iconia Tab A100 and Acer Iconia Tab A500 can cut the wait short with a little preview of what’s to come. Official builds have been leaked on XDA, and although there doesn’t appear to be any major issues, it’s worthy to note that this build may not be final. And it does break root. If you’re OK with all of that and want to see what’s in store for the April OTA updates, head here (A100) and here (A500). [Thanks Jerry!]
